Edited transcript of Scarcelight / Mikroknytes Visitors Studio Interview Roger : 2pm Further Noise Scarcelight Recordings featuring Mikroknytes in an A/V jam Roger : Welcome to Chris Jeely from Scarcelight, Derek Morton and John Coursey from Mikroknytes Scarcelight : thanks for having us roger Roger : Over the next 45 minutes they will be AV jamming and chatting about the label and their music Scarcelight : hello Roger : starting with Chris from Scarcelight Roger : Chris did you set up Scarcelight as a platform for your own music ? Scarcelight : initially yes in 2001 i did an album under my recording name accelera deck, that was quite different for me so i decided to release it myself that was the beginning, the label lay dormant for two years before i began releasing more music Roger : did you start out with a collective of people or have they just come along gradually helping to run the label Scarcelight : brad davis has helped some with the label, mostly involved in some of the music, the rest have come along gradually Roger : Are they people who release music through Scarcelight Scarcelight : brad davis is the drummer for slinger and we work together Roger : Does Scarcelight define a sound ? what do you listen for in deciding what to release Scarcelight : i think there is a scarcelight attitude, more than a sound. Roger : what would you define that Scarcelight : its hard to define what i listen for when working with others, mostly i know it when i hear it. Roger : Like Mikroknytes is it based around an improvised sound Scarcelight : no not all of scarcelight stuff is improvised the attitude is generally pretty down to earth folks working very hard at their art. Roger : iS Accelera Deck improvised or do you sequence pre ordered layers Scarcelight : live it is improvised with certain places having order, for albums it is editing the jam sessions i have with myself. Roger : Allot of CDR labels dont always break even on releases specially new ones, how does Scarcelight manage with this ? Scarcelight : well i am fortunate to be able to do the label and accelera deck full-time Roger : So your managing to make ends meet Scarcelight : yes it is paying for itself thus far, fingers crossed that it continues. Roger : What is the experimental music scene like in Alabama ? do you put on Label events / nights ? Scarcelight : there is no scene here locally for what scarcelight does, i tried bringing in goodiepal and bill hoorist back in the fall, but it just couldnt be worked out. Alabama is quite isolated. Roger : Is that why you put tours together like the Desktop Rock Tour ? Scarcelight : yes, touring is a big part of the label. when i release a record i try to put together something in support of it as well for example the new evol record punani shell has been supported by tours of switzerland and they will be coming over to america in two weeks Roger : any dates in the UK ? Scarcelight : the desktop rock tour is scarcelights first crack at a proper tour, there arent any plans for accelera deckto hit the uk yet Roger : OK over to the Mikroknytes, HI Derek, John.. john_mikroknytes : hey derek_mikroknytes : hey Roger : Listening to your music I notice that improvisation is a big part of your sound, do you determine what a track will sound like by the instruments you use derek_mikroknytes : yes, we like exploring the possibilities live and in the studio, we rarely end up where we start Roger : do you prepare for a performance by choosing the instruments / FX you will use ? derek_mikroknytes : we begin with an intitial concept like recently we have been using thumb pianos. Roger : In your live sets and studio recordings ? derek_mikroknytes : we take an instrument or patch and constantly practice.. then modify then practice again. if we like the results we keep it or try to revisit that idea such as using a ringmod on a thumb piano Roger : do you ever multitrack when recording or is it always recorded improvs derek_mikroknytes : we do a combination,of course sometimes we arrive at a place that can never be repeated and because of tech complexity we add using software f/x. For live-src it was very much built in the studio but using layers of live recordings from our shows. We hardly used any studio overdubs and the cdr on scarcelight is a live recording. i am in the process of working on compositions that i would like to release on dvd and i also perform with similar setups. Roger : what were the logistics of the performance where you integrated a video artist and two other sound groups in the same space with 3 PA systems ? derek_mikroknytes : It was a collaboration with chuck bettis and chris moore and a few tech folks. we setup in different areas of the room and used different pas with the audience in the middle, unfortunately we only had one vid projector. it was a bit chaotic but it was a good experiment. i like being able to immerse the audience with audio from all sides i think with more practice and experimentation it would work but we were very new with the concept. we could have performed more minimally. mikroknytes regularly do quad shows and i also do 6 channel solo performances Scarcelight : chuck bettis is releasing a solo record on scarcelight in the spring and some of dereks solo work will be released as an archival mp3! Roger : How did the collaboration with Video artist John Callander come about ? derek_mikroknytes : we met him through a mutal friend and he wanted to work on a video that was a abstract piece. i guess he enjoyed the stuff we were doing and it developed from there. Roger : it works well online, was it produced for the net ? john_mikroknytes : yeah i think it translates very well Roger : your performing in New york in March what else have you got coming up ? john_mikroknytes : well we have a few shows planned and one with chris in Dc shortly after the ny show. Roger : Cheers guys, thanks to Mikroknytes and Chris / Scarcelight Recordings derek_mikroknytes : hey all I think I am going to log out thanks for joining in, thank ya furthernoise you rock. |
